Organizations

Jerry and I joined the Qatar Natural Historical Society and attended the lecture on Dragonflies and Damselflies.  When I told Allison what we had done, she suggested we keep looking for some more new friends.  Actually though, the lecture was very entertaining, although I will not be one who is going out searching for previously undiscovered varieties here in Qatar.  We also thoroughly enjoyed going on a ramble to the desert with the group a few days later, driving across the sand and seeing a herd of camels.  After Thanksgiving we are looking forward to a camping trip in the desert to search for fossils, sharks teeth, and a visit to the inland sea.

Other groups that are filling my time are the Doha Garden Club (hoping to learn how to grow tomatoes and find out which are the easiest and hardiest plants) and a new book club.  The latest selection was The Book Thief, which I had read before but enjoyed the discussion again.  Our next book for December is Leap of Faith, Memoirs of an Unexpected Life by Queen Noor of Jordan.  Should be interesting to read that book while living in the Middle East.

Start up

We left Alaska ten years ago to start our life overseas and we are now on our third country, second cat, and no kids left at home.  Time to start writing stuff down before all the memories run together.  Also, November is NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) and I promised my daughter Allison that I would try to write again.

My husband Jerry moved to Doha, Qatar in January and I put 6 visitor stamps in my passport before finally moving here for good in September and getting my residence permit.  I now have drivers licenses for three countries--US (Alaska), the Netherlands, and now Qatar.  The real reason it took me so long to follow Jerry here was to get our youngest son, Craig, graduated from high school (The American School of The Hague) and then to settle all the kids into Texas A&M University.  Allison is there for grad school, Monica is a Senior taking a semester off to work with the Disney College Program in Florida, and Craig is a freshman.

Now I just have to figure out how to fill my days in the sun over here.
